Singled Out
2020
This series views the idea of a lone wolf. Someone who doesn't fit in but isn't scared to be who they are. It contemplates the loneliness of being misunderstood and left out, but it is the perseverance of your true self. Not succumbing to the words and fears of others and standing out, rather than blending in with the crowd. BREAK FREE IF YOUR TRAPPED, BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE!
This is a series of 5 abstract paintings. Each painting was created with different techniques to create texture. Each piece's background has the same multicolored yet muted tones which represents a mass of people who blend into one being. The background being multi colored is important since even when we fit in we still have our differences. The bright color that shines though becomes the focal which represents those who don't fit the norm whether that is wanted or not, and whether they accept that or not. In some cases the bright color is the same texture as the rest while in other paintings they are very different if not the opposite (flat vs textures, curvy vs sharp, etc.).
This series is not to say blending in is bad though I do think society plays a role in this blending and scarcity of differentness and how we feel about it. This series is less of a statement on those who blend in and more on those who do not. It is an empowering statement that shows there is nothing wrong with being different even if that difference creates alienation from those who blend in.
